We encourage teachers to use Great Lakes Science Center as a teaching resource so we offer FREE general admission to Ohio teachers every day! Just bring your school ID and enjoy free admission to hundreds of hands-on exhibits, as well as the NASA Glenn Visitor Center and Steamship William G. Mather. Looking for professional development opportunities? Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s MC2 STEM High School, Cleveland State University and the Ohio STEM Learning Network have teamed up to bring you exciting, new teacher training programs for the 2012-13 school year focusing on the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Now you can bring the FabLab, or Fabrication Laboratory, to your school. The FabLab is an amazing technology platform for learning and innovation that combines high-tech production equipment with an easy user interface to help students and teachers use rapid prototyping to design and build just about anything! Using NASA STEM Resources: A Teacher Workshop
Thursday, February 7
4:30 – 6:30 pm
This two-hour workshop is for teachers of grades 3-6 who want to implement new standards using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in the classroom. Learn about the latest Mars missions, use the NASA Engineering Design Process and network with other science-minded educators. Workshop materials include more than 80 pages of resources and activities with access to dozens of online activities. This workshop is hosted by Kim Moore, NASA STEM Educator Fellow. Web-based Science Labs
Great Lakes Science Center has teamed up with WVIZ/PBS ideastream to create online science investigations aligned with grades 5-8 Ohio Science Academic Content Standards and designed to facilitate inquiry-based learning.
PSI: Physical Science Investigation
This great free teaching tool is a series of 28 videos focusing on physical science concepts that are challenging to both teach and learn. Each experiment includes lesson plans, additional resources and two types of video: videos using discrepant event demonstrations to help develop students’ scientific and conceptual physics thinking and professional development videos to help teachers better understand the science and inquiry process. LSI: Life Science Investigation
This Emmy Award-nominated documentary-style investigation of key middle grade biology concepts incorporates the themes of invasive species, the health of Lake Erie’s ecosystems, and the potential invasion by Asian Carp.
