About Learning Lab

Learning Lab is school-day support for families, like a bridge between the classroom and home. Parents are facing significant challenges as they manage new schedules and expectations for their children’s education. With the Learning Lab, we’re looking to ease that worry by offering a safe, supportive alternative.

The Science Center has designed the program to be appropriate for children in grades K-8 who will spend part of their day participating in school virtually or doing homework. The STEM Learning team will facilitate the day, providing an experience that is more social and structured than what might be typically offered in childcare.

The Learning Lab is closer to a typical day in the classroom - we will provide children with the supports of a school day, including an educator to facilitate the work provided by their school, workspace, Internet access, a lunch break, and supervised, outdoor recess. There will also be fun, “non-screen,” STEM-related activities when there is downtime from their online school work, with opportunities to meet new friends and continue to experience the social and emotional growth that is an important part of each new school year.

Health and Safety Protocols

  • All Science Center staff undergo daily health screenings, including a temperature check, and wear personal protective equipment, including masks.
  • Students will undergo a daily health screening at drop-off each morning, including a temperature check. Masks will be provided for students who do not bring their own.
  • Workstations and materials are sanitized before and after each use and at the end of each day.
  • Each workspace will have access to a restroom and/or hand-washing station and hand sanitizer stations. Frequent hand-washing will be encouraged.
  • Social distancing measures will be followed, including maintaining a 6 foot physical distance between students and workstations.
  • Educator to student ratio of 1:9 with small classroom sizes to maintain social distancing.

Pick-up and Drop-off Procedures

  • Drop-off occurs from 7:30 - 9 a.m. in the front main entrance of Great Lakes Science Center. Parents should remain in their car during the drop-off process.
  • During check-in, a staff person will greet you at your car, perform a temperature check and a brief health screening of your student, then check your student in for the day.
  • Pick-up occurs from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the front main entance of Great Lakes Science Center. Parents should remain in their car during the pick-up process.
  • Only individuals added to a student's authorized pick-up list will be permitted to check-out the student.
