Refraction Reactions

Welcome to Refraction Reactions where young innovators will dive into the fascinating world of light and its properties! Campers will see spectacular experiments that reveal the power of light, energy, and heat in the Big Science Show “Energize It!” and use these principles to create their own teleidoscope, a device that uses mirrors to create ever-changing kaleidoscopic patterns from the world around them.

The Bionics Lab

Campers start their journey in the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater by watching the awe-inspiring film "The Superhuman Body," followed by an interactive exploration of the "Super Human: Power of Technology" exhibit, which showcases how science and technology can enhance human abilities. Campers will complete an invention challenge, where each camper will choose their favorite animal and design and build a prototype of a human-helping invention based on its special abilities.

See the Sound

Kick off the excitement with our Big Science Show, “Seeing Sound!” This dynamic demonstration makes the invisible world of sound waves visible allowing us to learn all about what sound is and how we can “see” vibrations and sound waves through different visual phenomena. Campers will explore sound waves and their properties by conducting an experiment called Dancing Sprinkles, where we will witness the power of sound waves as we make sprinkles jump against a surface, turning the invisible world of sound into something we can actually see!

See-Through Science

Explore the magical world of light and shadows! Campers will see the Big Science Show “Energize It!” allowing us to dive into the science of light and its interaction with materials to discover the differences between transparent, translucent and opaque, and how those differences affect light’s ability to travel through objects or become blocked. We will create our own laser mazes using mirrors and flashlights to explore how to guide a beam of light through various obstacles in this fun engineering challenge!

From Bats to Bionics

Today we experience the incredible world of sound and hearing, first seeing the feature film “The Superhuman Body” in the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, and then exploring our special exhibit, Super Human: Power of Technology! Campers will learn about echolocation used by animals like dolphins and bats and experience this amazing ability through a game of “Moths and Bats” where we will practice navigating using sound alone. We will also explore the science of hearing loss and how incredible inventions like hearing aids can make such an impact on human abilities and even design our own hearing device to help us through a hearing challenge.

Gotta Float 'Em All

Welcome to Gotta Float ‘Em All where we will explore the amazing world of aquatic science, inspired by the captivating universe of Pokémon! Our day will begin with the Big Science Show “Fire and Ice,” a live demonstration of how energy and matter can change forms, much like Pokémon evolution. We'll then learn about Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri and his real-life inspirations for the creatures he created, focusing on the intriguing Pokémon Dragale and its real-life inspiration, the leafy sea dragon. Campers will conduct a series of experiments to understand density and explore the differences between fresh and salt waters and how the type of water affects buoyancy

Spacecraft Design and Dynamics

Explore the incredible world of aerospace engineering! We will show one of our classic space films in the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, explore our amazing NASA exhibits, and discover the fascinating history of space exploration and the pioneers who made it all possible. Campers will test different aircraft designs to understand the principles of air resistance and lift and become engineers as they design and build their very own spaceships, drawing inspiration from the historic Apollo 11 and SkyLab 3 missions.
