Don’t miss the chance to take advantage of FREE general admission for all youth ages 2-12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6 at the Science Center, featuring live science shows, hundreds of hands-on exhibits, and our special temporary exhibition for summer TapeScape: International Tape Station.

This special summer day is the third of five free youth days that are funded through a generous gift from the Joan P. Wenk Charitable Fund over the next several years.

“Thanks to the generous support of the Wenk family we’ve been able to provide multiple opportunities for even more families in our community to experience the Science Center by welcoming children free of charge,” said Science Center President & CEO Dr. Kirsten Ellenbogen.

What can guests expect to discover in the TapeScape: International Tape Station exhibition? Using the humble product known as packing tape, the exhibition is an all-ages playscape made entirely out of packing tape wrapped around a metal frame – a TapeScape! It harnesses the tensile strength of tape – or tape’s ability to stretch under stress – to form a unique, multisensory installation strong enough for kids and adults to climb on and explore.

If you didn’t catch TapeScape here at the Science Center back in 2018, now is your chance to see why it became one of the most popular and requested exhibits we’ve ever had. This new iteration of TapeScape is the International Tape Station, a remarkable playscape structure inspired by the iconic design of the International Space Station! Equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and projection mapping technologies, this TapeScape is a fully immersive experience for guests, seven times larger than the one we built in 2018!

Guests will explore the exhibit to learn about the materials used to support life on the space station and the ongoing research happening aboard right now! Interactive hands-on activities offer fun for families as they learn more about materials used in space.

To accompany the International Tape Station exhibit, NASA’s Glenn Research Center has provided a variety of flight hardware and samples for display that showcase materials that have been flown on the space station. Displays include different types of polymers, thermal control fabric, shape memory alloys, and materials and designs for docking system seals that allow spacecraft to dock with the space station – all tested for durability and resilience outside the station. Samples flown as part of the Materials International Space Station Experiment missions on the exterior of the space station provide scientists with information to design durable materials for future missions to the moon, Mars, and the boundless wonder of space.
